Biology Minor

Students who do not wish to major in Biology but have a strong interest in the biological sciences have the option of pursuing a minor in Biology. The Biology minor complements a number of other majors, including Anthropology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology. The minor offers the flexibility to pair with majors outside of the sciences, including Muisc, Political Science and Religion. In addition, students have substantial flexibility in fashioning their minor according to the areas of biology that hold the greatest interest for them.

Biology minors must take:

BIO 123 – Biology I or BIO 110 – Contemporary Biological Problems

Plus, Biology minors must take additional BIO courses to total 20 semester hours. (BIO 311 – Biology Seminar does not count toward the 20 hours.)

Special Notes:

  • All students must complete the General Education requirements for the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees that are described in the college catalog. Each degree requires students to take courses in the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, cultures and mathematics. These courses are designed to provide a broad liberal arts background and skills specific to the particular degree program.
  • No grade of “D” shall be waived in 200-, 300- or 400-level biology courses being applied toward either a Biology major or a minor.
  • The Biology minor is not an option for students who major in Biology or who pursue the Environmental Science major Biology track.
  • Students who have first taken BIO 110 may then apply BIO 112 (but not BIO 111) as credit toward the required 20 hours, but students who have taken the BIO 111-112 sequence may not then apply BIO 110 as credit toward the minor.
