The Heidelberg Department of Music offers special music participation awards for talented non-music majors who enroll at Heidelberg. Award amounts vary from $500 to $1500 per year. Students from all performance areas will be considered for this award. The Department is especially interested in finding students to help in the following areas: Woodwinds/brass - French horn, oboe, bassoon, trombone; Strings - viola, cello, bass; Piano - students with interests in accompanying and/or jazz piano; Voice - tenor, bass.
1. All awards are offered for participation in the following areas:
• Ensembles: Participation in one or more of the College’s major ensembles: The Concert Choir, The College-Community Chorus, The Symphonic Band, and the College-Community Orchestra.
• Piano: Awards are also available for pianists who have an interest in accompanying (solo and/or ensemble) or jazz piano. Prior background and experience in these areas is recommended.
2. Award amounts will range from $500 to $1500 per year. The Department of Music will recommend award amounts based on the musical potential demonstrated through a scheduled audition. Students may demonstrate performance skills in up to two applied areas.
3. Awards are competitive; award amounts will be made based on demonstrated talent and the overall needs of the Department of Music at a given time.
4. Students who wish to apply for a music talent scholarship must submit the following materials available from Heidelberg:
a. Application form
b. Reference form, to be completed by someone who is familiar with a student’s musical and academic achievement
5. All forms should be sent to the following address by February 1, 2010 for complete consideration. Audition forms must be complete before an audition takes place. Send applications to:

6. Auditions: student auditions for the Music Talent awards will be available on the dates listed below. Alternate times are available, subject to available faculty; please contact the Music Office for more details. Dates for 2009-2010: Friday, February 5; Monday, February 15. Auditions will consist of a musical audition and an interview with appropriate faculty members.
7. Music for auditions: the Department recommends that students consult with their local teacher to select repertoire that bests represents their performance skills at the present time. For voice and piano auditions: please prepare two solos of a contrasting nature. For instrumental auditions: please prepare one solo work. All auditions must be completed by March 1 for scholarship consideration.
8. All winners will be notified by mail; the scholarship letter will describe the conditions under which this award may be earned and renewed each year. These requirements may include the following:
a. Registration/ participation in one or more of the primary ensembles listed above.
b. For keyboard students: specific performance assignments for the coming school year.
9. Music talent scholarships are renewable yearly subject to the following conditions:
a. The student remains as a registered member of the appropriate ensemble(s).
b. The student remains in good standing with the ensemble, based on attendance and the demonstrated ability to be a productive member of the ensemble, as defined by the course syllabus.
c. Keyboard students must maintain good performance reviews from ensemble and applied faculty to whom they are assigned.
d. The student maintains a satisfactory grade point average, (2.5 cumulative GPA,) based on the requirements set in the Heidelberg Catalog.
