Dear Heidelberg Student,

Know that you can study abroad at some point during your course of study.  Regardless of major, you can spend a semester, full year, or summer term studying in another country. Financial aid is available. Please visit Beth Kagy in the Financial Aid office to find out what aid is available to you.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION: SEPTEMBER 30 FOR SPRING, FEBRUARY 28 FOR FALL

Please consider the countless benefits of studying abroad. You will encounter new cultures, mature as a person, become more self-reliant and self-assured, and add the experience to your resume. Employers and graduate schools typically look very favorably upon those who have studied abroad. Heidelberg University offers many different study abroad experiences:

Semester, Year, or Summer Programs

American Junior Year at the University of Heidelberg: Study at Germany’s oldest university.  Contact Dr. Robert Berg (rberg@heidelberg.edu) or myself for more information on this program. Minimum Cumulative GPA for participation: 3.0

Oxford Study Abroad Programme: Study in England at Oxford University, one of the world’s most famous institutions. You’ll sign up for two or three tutorials, whereby you and your professor meet for weekly conversations to discuss reading and writing assignments. Minimum GPA: 3.3

Heidelberg Summer Course @ Oxford: Study at Oxford University with other Heidelberg students. Different Heidelberg faculty teaches this annual 3-credit course. Subject varies from year to year. No prerequisites or minimum GPA are required for this course.

The Center for Cross-Cultural Study: Study in Seville, Spain or Cordoba, Argentina. Contact Dr. Cindy Lepeley (clepeley@heidelberg.edu) for more information on this program. Minimum GPA: 3.0

Cemanahuac Educational Community: Study in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Contact Dr. Lepeley for more information. Minimum GPA: 3.0

Irish-American Scholars: Study in Northern Ireland. Tuition is waived, so you pay only airfare, room, board, and personal expenses. Minimum GPA: 3.0

IRSS: Study in England, Scotland, or Ireland. IRSS Director Gloria Vicary visits campus every year (usually in October) to discuss her programs. Minimum GPA: 2.7 or 3.0 (depending on university)

Note that if you would like to study in a country where Heidelberg currently does not have a program, you can apply to a Boston University or Butler University, schools that offer a variety of programs, or to the University of Virginia, which offers the Semester at Sea program. You can also work with organizations such as the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) or Australearn. Financial aid may be more difficult to obtain, however, should you opt for these types of study abroad opportunities.

Short-Term Study Programs

Heidelberg faculty regularly take classes or groups on trips abroad. In recent years, Dr. Dave Kimmel, Dr. Bob Murray, Professor Mary-Jo Murray, Dr. Amy Berger, Dr. Lepeley, and I have taken Heidelberg students to Italy, Greece, Germany, Scotland, Belize, Mexico, and Canada.
