CAPping off a successful year
The College Awareness Program (CAP) celebrated a successful year with a weeklong summer enrichment program that brought about 15 students to campus to experience a taste of college life last week.
The students from Fremont Ross High School spent the week living in residence halls, eating meals in the campus dining halls, attending academic classes in history, composition and science, and listening to motivational speakers. They participated in group activities and shared social time as well. Accompanied by their Heidelberg mentors, they capped off their week with a trip to Cedar Point on Friday. The students were selected for the program based on an essay and information form. They were among about 100 students from Ross who participated in a variety of CAP activities throughout the year at Heidelberg, Terra Community College and their high school.
Heidelberg received grant funding to create the CAP program, a collaboration among Heidelberg, Terra, Fremont City Schools and the African American Club of Fremont. Its aim is to increase access to college for minority students, demonstrate for them what the college experience is like, and help them prepare for college success.
