New field progressing on schedule
It’s been barely over two months since ground was broken on the renovation of Mayer Field, but work is progressing on schedule and the new recreation and athletic field should be ready for students’ return this fall.
You can’t miss the vibrant green hue of the field’s new artificial turf, which is the cornerstone of the $1.4 million project. Work was briefly stalled this summer due to drainage issues, but those were quickly resolved and crews returned to the job, said Rod Morrison, associate vice president for Facilities and Engineering. The field will be used for athletic and intramural contests for all students. The 400-meter track is being restriped and a new scoreboard and security lighting will be installed.
Another feature of the field will be installation of new lighting to accommodate night events. Later this month, American Electric Power will connect service to the field and the light bases and poles will be completed. Other aesthetic improvements are ongoing. Morrison said the pillars that connect wrought iron fencing are in place and installation of the railing should start soon. A new sound system and lamp posts are on their way as well.
The field renovation represents Phase I of the planned recreation and athletic complex. Another component is construction of a soccer game field at Hidden Valley, which currently serves as a practice facility for the men’s and women’s soccer teams.
