'Berg honors 'father of radio'
About 50 alumni returned for the WHEI Radio reunion as part of the Homecoming events last weekend to help pay tribute to Professor Emeritus Archie Thomas, who is considered the father of radio at Heidelberg. He was introduced by Professor Emerita Leanne Wolff, ’54.
Throughout the day, alumni talked with current students and other alumni about the impact of Heidelberg on their careers and offered advice to current students.Speakers introduced by Drs. Jan Younger and Gary Dickerson included Kim Zandy, ’90; George Freeman, ’54; Bob Frantz, ’90; Tad Dickerson, ’82; Doug Stephan, ’68; Pete Larsen, ’82; Laurie Hovater-Meadows, ’98; Kim Nelson-Berk, ’01; and John Buccigross, ’88.
In the afternoon, Gary unveiled the WHEI Radio Hall of Fame and its first class of inductees, whose photos are displayed on the third floor of Founders Hall.

Later in the day, alumni and friends visited the future location of WHEI in Krieg Hall, which will become the Media Communications Center in the fall.
During the dinner that concluded the events of the day and featured keynote remarks by John Buccigross (right), Dr. Jim Troha announced that Paul Thomas, ’66, and his wife, Pamela Stephenson have made a major gift to name the reception area of the new facility in honor of Paul’s parents, Archie and Margaret.
Gary organized the reunion event with assistance from WHEI student staff members, Irene Frisch, Wendy Kelbley and Kathy Venema.
