International dinner: Discovering the world

In a fitting kickoff to inauguration festivities, the Heidelberg and the Tiffin communities came together Wednesday night to celebrate diversity and friendship at the annual International Dinner on campus.

Hosted by the World Student Union and the Office of International and Multicultural Student Affairs, the event began with a parade of flags and a welcome by Megan Tasnadi, WSU’s president. Throughout the evening, guests were treated to performances by various ethnic groups.

Kicking off the evening was a Latino dance by the members of the Bowling Green State University Latino Association. Heidelberg’s Deutschklub entertained the crowd with two songs, “Die Gedanken sind Frei” (“Thoughts are free”) and “Alt Heidelberg” (“Old Heidelberg”).

Recent graduate Bogdan Berindean of Romania gave a stirring violin performance of “Largo” by J.S. Bach and Heidelberg junior Jeff Meyers Jr. performed an a capella number.

One of the highlights of the evening was the reading of the Maya Angelou’s “Inauguration Poem,” recited by Heidelberg’s international students and faculty members, who recited the verses in their native languages and wearing their native attire.

The evening concluded with Chinese student Cecily Zhong singing “Tian hei hei,” with piano accompaniment by Guoran Yu.

Aramark Campus Dining prepared and served a menu with an international flavor, including hummus, spring rolls, pita and flat bread, orange salad with olives and onions in a lemon vinaigrette, curried chicken with chutney, saffron rice, spicy peas, tomatoes and onions, and apple kuchen and tiramisu for dessert.
