Happy birthday, Heidelberg U.
Heidelberg’s original six buildings took center stage on Wednesday when the university celebrated Founders Day.
Archivists Bob and Dorothy Berg compiled a detailed display of the first six structures – Founders Hall, Gerhart House (at 285 E. Perry St.), the Octagon House, the former President’s Home (now the Honors House), University Hall and the Boarding Hall, which stood from 1873-1926.For each structure, the Bergs researched information about the different building names through the generations, as well as their various functions. Information on construction and renovation projects also was presented.
Also included in the display was information on Heidelberg’s past presidents. On Veterans Day, a special display paid tribute to the university’s World War I veterans, known on campus as the Student Army Training Corps., and some 20 alumni fallen World War II veterans. The campus community enjoyed birthday cake to celebrate the day the university was founded – Nov. 11, 1850.
