Transfer Policy

Transfer credit is determined by the Office of the Registrar. Credit earned with grades of C- or better from regionally accredited institutions will be considered for transfer. Transfer credit does not affect the Heidelberg College cumulative grade point average and will not replace credit earned for the same course at Heidelberg College. At least 60 semester hours that are applied toward a degree must be completed at a four-year, regionally accredited institution. The last 30 hours credited toward a degree at Heidelberg College must be taken in residence. Courses identified as “Developmental” or “Pre-College” and computer classes that were taken more than 10 years ago are not eligible for transfer credit. Credit earned at non-U.S. institutions will be considered for transfer credit with the submission of a World Education Services (WES) evaluation. Students interested in foreign transfer credit evaluations are encouraged to contact WES at www.wes.org.

As part of the degree requirements at Heidelberg College, students must earn at least 30 semester hours in undergraduate courses numbered 300 and above. Courses transferring to Heidelberg do not count toward this requirement unless the course was taken at the 300 or above level at the original credit-granting four-year institution. Courses taken at two-year institutions are not considered for credit toward this 30 hour course level requirement.

At least one-half of the hours required for a major at Heidelberg College (not including allied courses) must be taken as coursework at Heidelberg College and does not include credit by exam or CLEP. In the event a student’s transfer credit awards more than one-half of the hours required by their intended major, additional course requirements will be arranged between the Department Chair and the student to ensure that the student meets the one-half of the hours in the major residency requirement.

Heidelberg College recognizes that institutions offer a wide variety of courses. In the case that a transfer course does not have an equivalent Heidelberg course but is determined to be transferable, elective credit will be awarded either as a general elective or a department specific elective. Courses that transfer as general electives may count toward general education requirements. If a course is transferred as a general education elective, the area of general education fulfilled by the course will be noted in parentheses with the course equivalent.

Students are responsible to review and understand the requirements of their program at Heidelberg College. If a student wishes to appeal a transfer credit decision, he/she may submit a copy of the syllabus from the course in question to the Department Chair. Appeals granted by the Department Chair will be communicated to the Office of the Registrar and amended on the student’s transfer evaluation.
