Cooperative Learning Communities

In additional to the six traditional residence halls, special interest housing options are available to residential students. The CLCs represent independent housing opportunities for groups of individuals who have common interests. The CLCs are designed to provide an opportunity for students to develop initiatives and programs, which they feel will enrich the Heidelberg University and Tiffin community. In return, the groups receive independent housing in a university owned home. Although your program must fit the occupancy level of one of the available houses (occupancy ranges from 4 - 10), it is our hope that the actual active membership in your CLC will extend beyond the occupants living in the house. The idea is to create a program that becomes an integral part of the campus community.

A CLC group may be part of an established organized club on campus, or it may simply be a group of students who have similar interests with a plan to share that interest with the larger campus community. Priority will be given to the merit and quality of the theme and the proposal versus the individual or collective class standing of the group members (house members must be entering sophomores, juniors, or seniors of the same gender).

As a member of the CLC program, you both as a CLC community and as individuals will be expected to contribute to the common good of the university community. Each member of the CLC program is expected to complete 10 hours of community service per semester in order to remain in the program. It is also expected that each house be maintained at full occupancy at all times. Each CLC will be expected to use the living space as well as the special abilities and interests of the group members to provide something that will benefit the Heidelberg University student body.

Your group must designate an advisor who is willing to assist you in your efforts. The Office of Residence Life will then assess the implementation of the groups' goals and objectives throughout the year. All CLCs will be evaluated throughout the year in a joint effort between the house members and the Office of Residence Life. Year-to-year re-appointment to a house is not guaranteed.

Although CLC houses are considered independent living for upper-class students, CLC residents are responsible for, and accountable to those university policies that apply to all students that live on campus. All applicants must agree to follow CLC expectations and abide by all university policies as stated in the Heidelberg University Guidelines and Community Standards.

Given the independent nature of CLC house living, students who have significant judicial history with the university will be evaluated and considered on an individual basis. In such cases, participation as a house member may be denied.
